Woodpile — the main types of structures and tips for building with your own hands (75 photos)

A beautiful cottage is not only well–groomed beds, paths, a gazebo, but also a garden. How high should the trees be? There are rules that must be followed when planting them, caring for them. Every summer resident needs to know the provisions of SNiP 30-02-97 and agricultural machinery.

Trees can be of any height you want, if they are planted at the right distance from neighbors, roads, electric wires, a country house. They can have many branches.

Someone likes bonsai, and someone loves the forest. The cottager may need firewood. A stove in the bath, a fire in the fireplace or in the yard, in the barbecue can always be lit. Trees are their source. Where to store firewood? We need a woodpile.

Making a woodpile with your own hands is a simple task.  It is perhaps more difficult to learn how to chop and chop firewood. It's only in fairy tales and epics that the matter is disputed. It is unusual for a modern person to work with both a chainsaw and an axe. It takes time to develop a skill, the appearance of dexterity.

There is also enough firewood at the dacha, but it burns quickly, it must be constantly thrown up, otherwise the flame will blow out with the wind or it will go out by itself. Large branches, massive pieces of wood burn longer, the wind is not a hindrance. That's why they are appreciated.

The length of the log usually does not exceed half a meter, often less. It is additionally split with an axe into four to eight parts, sometimes more. This is done in order to dry the tree.

Freshly cut wood does not catch fire, smokes, gives soot, does not burn completely. It will take much longer to dry a log than to dry firewood – in the inner layer, in the core, the juice of the plant circulates most actively, and in the bark it does not circulate at all.

By splitting a log into several parts, you can speed up the process by providing air access to the wettest part.

It is also convenient to fold firewood due to its triangular, square shape. More wood is placed in the woodpile. Logs will fall, it will be difficult to lift them, throw them. So it's better to learn how to work with an axe or a chainsaw. It is not necessary to use an axe – it is a tribute to tradition.

Firewood should be chopped taking into account the time it will take for them to dry and taking into account the life cycle of the tree. If you do this in the spring, they will dry out in 4 months, approximately. Cut at the end of summer, they dry for almost a year — 300-310 days.

But if they are chopped in July, it will take two and a half months to dry – during this period, the juice enters the young branches, fruits most actively, does not linger in the woody part of the trunk.

The fact that firewood is easy to stack, a fairly stable monolith is formed, both good and bad at the same time. Air access is limited. It is advisable, before determining in the woodpile, to dump them in bulk, leave for a couple of weeks in that part of the yard where there is a lot of sun.

Varieties of woodcutters

It will take quite a bit of time to make a woodpile yourself. The design is elementary. After viewing the photo of the woodpile for firewood, you can once again make sure of this.

A lot of attention should be paid to aesthetics, otherwise an important component – a decorative function - will be lost. You can count on your strength, imagination, available materials, and start creating a drawing. And you can take a closer look at those options that you definitely can't do on your own.

Metal woodpiles, for example, can be ordered from a blacksmith, painted or varnished. They can be supplemented by forging. Metal flowers, foliage, an abstract combination of geometric shapes, lines will perform a decorative function.

The design will be easy. Even a large-sized woodpile made of metal in a suburban area with a small area will look great.

Optimal dimensions

There are different woodpiles. You can, of course, choose the most beautiful option and not worry about anything else. But it is better to take into account other parameters – height, length, width. They are chosen depending on how much firewood you need to have in stock.

The wood stove for the cottage should be practical. Bulkiness is excluded. It should fit in a shed, for example. If you need a little firewood, it is better to give extra to a neighbor, sell. Perhaps it's time to get carried away with carpentry, handicrafts, this material, learn how to make crafts from wood.

In order to protect firewood from dampness, moisture in autumn, winter, and spring, as little protective materials as possible should be used. Therefore, the structure is usually placed near the wall of the house, on a concrete foundation.

As a result, precipitation affects only one side of the monolith of stacked firewood. They do not get very wet and do not rot due to the fact that air access is limited.

Before concrete was invented, firewood was sometimes stored on the ground covered with a layer of bark. However, they were spent faster in those days, throwing them into the oven, heating the house with them, cooking food with their help.

If the shed place are not yet free, you can chop them up and leave it in the yard. When the barn was spacious, new moved to its rightful place, so as not to rot, to lie in warmth.

Famous fun, beautiful woodpile

A round woodpile can still be stacked on the bark. It's a spectacular sight – a tower of firewood. To create it, you only need to designate a place, drive a stake, tie a rope to it and draw a circle using small wooden logs, focusing on its length.

The soil should be covered with bark and begin to place firewood. They will be able to lie for a long time if they try. The wind will not destroy this structure.

A stacked pile of firewood for a modern person, rational, will cause amazement and admiration, of course. This is a wonderful yard design element. However, sometimes you don't want to occupy a place where you can create a flower garden, plant something.

In this case, you can buy a metal round woodpile, with several sectors, put it right on the porch, for example, so that you don't go far for firewood in bad weather.

How to lay down a round woodpile of only firewood on the porch? You can't do without measuring instruments, or you need a good eye. You can try, take a chance. The result can exceed the wildest expectations. It is not necessary that a woodpile made of firewood should be round. It can be any one you want.

The classic and easiest option

A square woodpile made of hammered boards is both a place for storing firewood, and an additional surface on which you can put a basket of fruit, a bottle of kvass, and put garden tools. Such a woodpile for firewood is made with your own hands very quickly – no special skills are needed. We just need to put together a frame.

Knowing what its length, height, width should be, it is easy to draw a drawing or make a sketch, a sketch in a notebook, notebook. This will help you not deviate from the goal, reduce the risk of errors and inaccuracies. It will be easier to compare the idea and the result.

A wood stove for a cottage can consist of purchased or hand-cut boards. You will need nails and a hammer. Later it will be possible to paint it in an interesting color, to draw an abstraction in different colors.

There will be no question how to make a woodpile with your own hands, if a greenhouse was built, and polycarbonate sheets remained. This material can be purchased specifically to create a wood stove, evaluate its beauty, reliability, practicality, and then build a greenhouse, build a gazebo out of it.

Polycarbonate sheets of bright colors will decorate the territory, perhaps even better than firewood.
