Vine fence — weaving schemes and decorating recommendations for beginners (75 photos)
The first thing a man did when he built his first dwelling was to build a high fence around it. He did this in order to hide himself and hide his loved ones from prying eyes. Millennia have passed, the principles of building houses have radically changed, and the custom of enclosing a dwelling with a fence lives and lives. Today, a hedge is not only a way to protect a house, but also its integral decorative element.
There are many different fence construction technologies. One of them is weaving from a vine.
A wicker fence is used both to enclose the entire site and to highlight zones inside it. The material used is vine, willow branches, hazel, reed. Choose long and flexible branches and intertwine them, placing them parallel to each other. As a support and a transverse base, thin columns are used, dug into the ground perpendicular to it.
The wicker fence has obvious advantages: environmental friendliness, simplicity of execution (weaving is available to anyone, it is enough to practice a little and weave a small square, which can then be used as an internal partition or mat), decorative properties, accessibility of the material and its cheapness.
It is worth listing the disadvantages of a wicker fence made of vines: unreliability, inability to serve as a full-fledged fence, short service life, difficulty in replacing damaged areas, lack of fire safety. Nevertheless, wicker fences are quite common in landscape design.
There are several varieties of wicker fences. They vary in height from 20-50 cm for fencing flower beds, up to 100-200 cm for construction around a house with a plot.
In the direction of the fence rods are horizontal and vertical. In the latter case, the rods stuck in the ground can even take root, then a green fence will appear.
Material for wicker fence
It will be much easier to weave a fence from a flexible rod. It can be willow, vine, reed, the main thing is the elasticity of the material. Any willow will do. It is better to harvest it in the off-season, but if necessary, you can do it in the summer. It is better to go for it in places of high humidity.
The rod should be smooth, without unnecessary branches. There should be no visible signs of illness on it. In order to save time later on fitting the vine to size, you can use a measuring device when cutting it from a tree.
For vertical supports, thicker and inflexible branches with a diameter of at least 4 cm are needed. Pine branches are suitable for this. The length of the supports should be 50 cm greater than the height of the future fence. It is on these 50 cm that the supports will be dug into the ground.
If it is decided to make a fence from reeds, you need to collect it from swamps or lakes. It has a tip in the form of a panicle, not a brown cone. Inside, the reed stem should not be hollow. It is the pulp with which it is filled that gives it the necessary elasticity.
Cut the vine with a sharp knife diagonally. The cut rod must be stored properly so that it dries out. You can spread it out in one layer in a well-ventilated room or at least under a canopy. You can not lay out the reed, but tie it in bundles and hang it to dry.
Immediately before weaving, the dried material is steamed to restore its flexibility. Steaming is an express method. But you can do it in another way. A couple of weeks before the fence is erected, put the handles in water for 30-40 cm.
It is impossible not to mention such a material as polymer vine. It is sold in shops and construction or garden markets. It is a flexible tube with a rough surface, imitating a natural rod. It is very convenient to use, since it was initially given all the properties necessary for weaving: flexibility, optimal length.
The fence made of polymer vines turns out to be more even. He is not afraid of moisture and fire. Although, the artificiality of the material is noticeable, and a special flavor is lost, which only natural material can give to the hedge.
Weaving technology
To make a fence from a vine with your own hands, in addition to vines and supports, you will need a wire, a hammer, a shovel, sand, several metal posts, a pruner, a hatchet to do the work.
First of all, you need to make a marking for the future fence, defining its boundaries. At the corners, dig in metal posts and pull a string on them 10-15 cm from the ground. You will get a smooth polygon. Along the string , dig a trench 30-50 cm deep and 20 cm wide . Fill the sand into the trench. This is a drainage that will not allow the supporting branches to rot quickly.
In the backfilled trench , dig supporting branches in increments of 50 cm . The depth of digging is 30-40 cm . Their lower end should be sharpened with an axe before digging in. Then they can not be dug in, but hammered. By wetting the ends in an antiseptic composition, you can significantly slow down their rotting.
Tamp down the sand thoroughly so that the supports hold tightly. It is possible to install several metal supports among the wooden ones to increase the rigidity of the structure.
Peel the bark from the twigs. To lighten them, they can be treated with hydrogen peroxide, to give a darker shade – a stain, to give a resemblance to mahogany – potassium permanganate, for a gray-brown shade – iron vitriol.
You can fix the vine between the supports in different ways: tightly or with a gap, one by one or in pairs, in threes in a staggered order. If, at a distance of 50 cm from the ground, gird all the supports with a transverse vine, and then repeat the girding another 50 cm higher, the remaining rods can be positioned vertically, not horizontally. Now it remains to cut the rods in the upper part with a pruner exactly. To do this, pull the string again. On the upper edge of the fence to let the edging.
If the weaving is traditional – horizontal, you need to start it from the bottom. The edges of each vine should be carefully masked by connecting them with a wire. With dense weaving, each new row should be tapped with a hammer so that the gaps disappear.
The edges of the rods of the uppermost row should be firmly fixed with wire, masking it. You can fix the rod with screws to the supports. The finished fence can be covered with the same stain or spray paint. Antiseptic treatment will not hurt either.
How to decorate a fence
The photo of the vine fence shows that they are trying to decorate it, make it more alive. To do this, you can make some supports a little higher and hang clay krynki on them.
You can add a special flavor if you plant decorative or ordinary sunflowers along the fence, dig a bench, put a cart wheel, the cart itself or a trough with pumpkins next to it. Hang pots with ampel plants on the fence.
Now you know how to make a fence from a vine, and you will cope with this task on your own.
