How to grow a good crop of vegetables, while spending a minimum of effort and time? And after all, I want the garden to please the eye, so that continuous rows, strips of beds are not boring. But it can be turned into a flower garden, arrange a vegetable garden on the principle of a flower garden. And for vegetables, you can build flower beds, mixborders, rabatki, etc., you only need desire and imagination.
The vegetable garden may well look aesthetically pleasing, beautiful, original. Having set out to create a flower garden for yourself, at the very beginning you will only need to spend time and your efforts once, and in the following years you will only have to plant, water, clean and rejoice that the plot is beautiful, cozy, that such gardening allows you to devote your leisure time to other hobbies, meetings with friends, full rest.
This photo of a vegetable garden in a suburban area demonstrates one of the options for a decorative vegetable garden, which everyone is quite capable of creating on their own plot.
A beautiful garden in the country can be separated from the house and yard by a low-growing hedge. For a lively and useful fence, Japanese quince, lapchatka, tunberg's barberry and admireation, rosehip, hawthorn, black currant, golden, alpine, St. John's wort, gooseberry, holly magonia are quite suitable. These shrubs tolerate haircuts well, any original borders and fences can be formed from them.
Vegetables of different colors can create a whole artistic canvas on the suburban area. It is quite possible for anyone. However, when creating such a flower garden, it is necessary to take into account several factors necessary for the conceived vegetable garden to bring joy and benefit, be beautiful and fruitful.
Let's consider a few tips on the design of a garden in the country, which will help to easily and simply achieve excellent results and harvest.
Before starting to make a plan for the breakdown of the garden plots directly, it should be taken into account that vegetables need a sunny place, protected from northern winds (you can protect the beds with a taller hedge, and from evergreen shrubs).
It is necessary to leave a place for a compost heap, which can be decorated with herbaceous perennials (sage, lavender, St. John's wort, oregano, etc.), low-growing shrubs.
The place for the vegetable garden should not be located far from the irrigation system. Be sure to observe crop rotation on beautiful beds.
Planning a vegetable garden
First you need to determine the composition of the soil on the site, its acidity, composition (sandy, clay, peat, limestone, loam). This is important because, for example, sorrel, potatoes like acidic soil, medium–acidic – carrots, turnips, pumpkins, root crops, moderate - onions, legumes, cucumbers, and neutral and slightly alkaline – cabbage, beets.
When planning a vegetable garden, it should be taken into account how much time can be allocated for caring for it. Usually these are eight or nine beds, which can be arranged in the form of geometric shapes, such as a square, triangle, different rays.
The sun should illuminate one side of them from sunrise, the other at sunset, which is especially important for light–loving vegetables, herbs, i.e. the beds are located from north to south. The minimum lighting for plants is from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
It is good if the plot for the vegetable garden is on an even place, if the territory is uneven, then it is better to take the southern or south-eastern, south-western gentle slopes under it, but the northern ones are absolutely not suitable for this.
We must not forget about the drainage of beds – good drainage is needed so that the root system of plants develops and strengthens, and does not rot from an overabundance of moisture, does not suffocate from lack of oxygen in excessively moist soil.
When planning a vegetable garden, it should be taken into account that the agrotechnics of some crops completely differ in the need of plants in light, humidity, and soil composition. Therefore, zones are planned first, and already zones are planned for beds. Such planning makes it easy to observe the compatibility of plants with each other, to ensure the correct crop rotation, which will allow you to get a good harvest.
Beds and paths between them should be comfortable and proportionate. The bed should not be too wide – so that you can freely reach its middle from both sides. And the path – so that you can walk freely on it, even better – so that a garden wheelbarrow passes freely on it.
Tracks
The paths between the beds should not be overgrown with weeds and take a lot of time for weeding, it is better to cover them. There are various options for the equipment of paths – blackening of lawn grass resistant to trampling, covering with tiles, gravel, broken bricks.
To prevent weeds from sprouting through them, first geotextile or roofing material that does not pass light must be laid on the paths, and crushed stone, gravel, stone chips, and other material are already on it.
There are various ready–made plates for garden paths on sale - rubber, plastic, or special roll coverings. Another option is a coating of plastic bottle caps, which can also serve as a massage mat.
Beds
For a decorative garden, different types of beds are made: high, vertical, wall-mounted, beds-corobas, beds-pyramids, etc. This is especially valuable and practical if the plot is small, and you want to grow a lot of different vegetable crops.
High beds are created for almost one season mainly for melons, sometimes for potatoes. Compost is reported in them, the soil is covered from above. In areas where the bear is common, compost is not added, and the ridges are raised by adding soil.
The most popular beds are corobes, which, as the details of the designer, you can lay out the territory as your heart desires. They are done simply: fences are installed on pre-planned and prepared places, then drainage material (crushed stone, brick chips, pebbles, gravel, expanded clay, etc.) is poured into such a box at the bottom, a small layer of sand is poured on it, then prepared soil is added. Fencing of such beds are boards, slate, plastic sheets.
For a small plot and not only another option – a pyramid bed. It refers to vertical gardening. Pyramids are most often used for strawberries, but other plants can also be planted in them.
Therefore, pyramid beds are used not only with practical benefits, but also as an element of landscape design. It can be made from any materials at hand, of any size and shape. For example, plastic bottles, car tires, metal or plastic pipes, even flower pots are used.
Pyramids are made of wood, plastic. You can make them of different shapes, heights, diameters – as your imagination tells you and how convenient it will be.
Vertical beds can be wall-mounted, or in the form of a rack, made of plastic boxes, tires, construction mesh, wooden or plastic barrels, PVC sewer pipes, plastic bottles, wooden pallets, etc. It is better to fill such beds with ready–made soil, it is better to buy it in a store.
But such beds are more suitable for strawberries, herbs, flowers. Their soil dries up quickly and is depleted, so the plants have to be fed and watered more often.
Watering
When creating a decorative vegetable garden, it is necessary to think over the irrigation methods correctly, which is very important especially in dry seasons.
The most popular method is watering with a spray hose. You can use various containers (for example, plastic bottles) that are dug into the soil, from small holes water will seep directly to the roots.
Another way is drip. A pipe with small holes is laid in the box as the box itself is laid, then it is attached to the main hose or pipe. Drip irrigation saves a lot of time, effort and water consumption. Now ready-made drip irrigation kits are sold in special stores.
Useful ideas
In order for plants to be comfortable in such beautiful, original beds, in order to harvest good harvests, you can use some secret things like trifles. However, little things help a lot in caring for the garden and growing your favorite plants:
- it is good to add hydrogel to the soil of vertical beds – it will not dry out quickly, but it will retain moisture longer
- next to vegetables, it is useful to plant marigolds, nasturtium and other flowers-neighbors that naturally protect other plants from pests
- if ants are suddenly found in the beds, you can plant a celandine bush directly into the anthill – the ants will leave
- it is good to put a grid on the bottom of the beds-boxes – moles will not spoil the planting
- after harvesting the vegetables, it is good to immediately sow the seeds in the beds
- mustard – quickly gives a green mass, disinfects the soil, gets rid of wireworm, feeds with nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium
- surepitsa – structures, loosens the soil, which helps the roots of plants to breathe, increases moisture capacity
- lupin – gives a lot of green mass, enriches the soil with nitrogen, loosens the soil, scares off the larvae of the May beetle, the bear, etc. with roots. soil pests
- vetch and oats enrich the soil with nitrogen and potassium
- next to vegetables, you can plant honey plants (white clover, mother-and-stepmother, honeydew, mint, lemon balm, cucumber grass, phacelia) in the beds, which will attract bees, which will ensure pollination of flowers to increase the yield
- the bear does not like parsley, marigolds, calendula; by planting them around the perimeter, you can protect your garden
