Rolled lawn — use in landscape design and lawn design (90 photos)

A rolled lawn is a turf of lawn grasses grown on breathable soil "pillows" made of special fiber, with the help of seeds. The finished turf cloth is rolled into rolls, then stored or transported. Rolls are transported on pallets to avoid quality losses.

The Canadians were the innovators in this type of landscaping. But now the technologies are different from the old production methods. New production methods make it possible to obtain such amazing lawns, as in the photos below of the rolled lawn.

The main positive difference between a rolled lawn and a seeded one is the speed of obtaining the desired result. If the grass seeds sown in the treated soil on the site will please in a couple of months, then laying a rolled lawn will shorten the waiting process to 2-3 days.

The canvas can be restored if damaged: the necessary piece is cut off and changed to a new one. The grass is the same color in the shade and in the sun. Feels good in our Russian climate. Such a lawn well masks the moderate unevenness of the landscape.

Choosing a quality lawn

The rolled lawn was nicknamed for a specific method of transportation, it is also called a ready-made lawn.

Coating production methods are divided into two types:

Sowing seeds on a grid of agrofibre. First, the soil is treated with special preparations, leveled, compacted and spread a grid. Seeds are placed on top and covered with a 2 cm layer of soil. They are watered so as not to allow the soil to dry out. After interweaving the roots of the sprouted grass with a grid, a sufficiently strong canvas is obtained that can be rolled into a roll.

Growing seeds without a grid. Such a lawn is grown on chernozem and peat. Grown on chernozem, it is more durable and adapts better to changing conditions. It takes 1.5-2 years to get the finished product. During this time, the roots of the herbs are so closely intertwined that they form a dense layer. This layer is cut off and rolled into rolls with a special technique.

There are two main types of rolled lawn:

  • The first is grass, no more than 1.5 years old. The soil layer on it does not exceed 15 mm. The size of the panel is 2000 * 400 mm.
  • The second one is made on a plastic mesh, its age is 2.5 months. The dimensions of the canvas of such an artificial lawn are 3000 * 750 mm.

The soil on which the rolled lawn was grown should be similar in composition to the earthen environment on your site. Otherwise, the plants may not take root.

The best rolled lawn is homogeneous and does not have yellowed grass on it. The greens are thick, juicy green, the root system should not be over–dried - young white roots should be present in it.

Be sure to check the quality certificate, do not take the seller's word for it. Among the declared rolled lawns from the manufacturer, fakes are often found. Examining the roll, shake it by holding the edge. A good quality product will not fall apart in front of your eyes.

Pay attention to whether there are many weeds on the lawn, whether the plants have a healthy appearance, whether the roots are tightly intertwined with the turf. Also remember – a lawn grown according to all the rules cannot cost a penny, most likely something is wrong with it.

Herbal mixtures that are used for lawn

Seeds for planting are usually taken from such types of cereal grasses as: perennial raigas, some types of fescue, vole, bluegrass. Balanced is considered a combination in a mixture of oatmeal and bluegrass. They complement each other perfectly.

In hot weather, the fescue rises above the bluegrass that has folded its leaves, and if it gets colder, the bluegrass blooms them in all their glory. Fescue has established itself as an unpretentious, hardy grass that is not susceptible to diseases, it tolerates hot weather well and can grow in the shade.

Meadow bluegrass is more demanding of care. With insufficient attention to yourself (untimely watering or mowing), it loses its color saturation. This plant loves sunny areas, begins to wither in the shade. But, bluegrass is quite frost-resistant. With optimal care, such a lawn will delight for several decades.

The life span of raigas, a plant that is often included in lawn mixes, is about 3 years. It is included in the composition because it has fast germination and bright color.

The lawn on which one raygas is planted is short—lived, at first it bushes, which looks untidy, two years later it begins to thin out. This happens at any sowing density, the reason is the absence of rhizomes.

The field grass is also used in the device of the lawn, especially golf courses. This plant often gets sick and responds badly to insufficient care. With its excess in the mixture, the vole fills the entire space, displacing other grasses.

Styling Features

When the choice is made, the question arises: how to lay a rolled lawn?

First you need to remove construction debris from the place chosen for the lawn. Then arrange drainage. There are several ways to achieve this.

First: dig a square-shaped pit (each side = 45 cm), 50-60 cm deep. Put broken bricks and stones on the bottom, with a layer of about 40 cm, tamp. The next layer is sand, with fine gravel (10 cm) added to it, this row must also be tamped. Place a layer of fertile earth on top, level it out.

The second way is a bit more complicated. It is necessary to lay, capturing the entire surface of the future lawn: fertile soil, sand, gravel, broken bricks. This method is rarely used, usually the first one is enough.

Arrange a fence of pegs and a rope stretched between them. Then apply fertilizer over the entire area of the future lawn, mixing it with a rake with the soil. These actions are taken no later than a week before the roll-up is laid.

The best time to lay a lawn is spring or early autumn (in the absence of frost). In the spring, the planted lawn must be watered.

We choose a day with dry sunny weather and start laying. We roll out the roll in the required place and put a press of boards on it, press it down, but do not hammer it into the soil. The level and the board need to identify surface irregularities and eliminate them.

Level the soil with a shovel or sprinkle the earth, depending on the nature of the landscape. It is impossible to level the rolled turf, it will destroy the plants. After laying the first panel, proceed to the second. Placing the layers on the surface, press them to the previously spread ones.

The beginning of each row is a whole piece of turf or half. From the edges, the plot is not covered with scraps. The strips are arranged in the same order as when laying bricks and in a straight line. If necessary, you can trim the turf where you need a curved edge of the lawn.

You can walk on the spread rolls only on the board, it is not advisable to move around the prepared, but uncovered areas.

If cracks form between the rolls of grass, you need to fill them with mulch (sawdust or gravel crumbs), using a broom and the back surface of the rake. When the work on laying the lawn has come to an end, you can trim its edges along a given contour.

In the spring (if you have laid the lawn in the fall), the first herb care works are carried out. First, pruning is carried out, but not strong, only the tips of the grass need to be cut off. Deeper pruning is left for later.

If there are irregularities in the landscape – it is possible to smooth them with mulch. In the absence of rains, abundant watering is mandatory, as well as regular fertilizing with fertilizers, weed control. All these measures will make the lawn well-groomed, attractive and durable.
