Creating a fence from a hedge is an exciting, useful, and interesting activity. Such a natural natural fence will last for many years with proper care. It's nice to relax next to him, it's easy to breathe, the mood improves.

Hedge — views

The living fence differs in height, composition of plants. He can:

  • grow freely or be shorn;
  • be located in one row, several rows;
  • consist of one type of plant or of different;
  • be solid or translucent, etc.

High hedge – usually higher than 2.5 meters, located on the outer border of the plot.

The average is from 1 m to 2, divides the plot into different zones, and is also used along its outer border.

Curb – fence up to 1 m high for different areas on the site: flower beds, lawns, paths, playgrounds.

Fences vary in shape:

  • growing naturally and formed. Growing as in nature – do not require any special adjustment, grow naturally;
  • formed – regular pruning is needed; plants are given a certain geometric shape.

Hedge levels and rows

Multilevel:

  • in one row
  • in two rows
  • in three rows

They are planted as monopods, also monochrome.

Hedge in one row – plants are planted in a row at one interval (small bushes - 30-40 cm; medium, with a spreading crown – 50-75 cm; trees – from one and a half meters); it all depends on the type and size of plants.

Two-, three-row ones are arranged chess-like, considering how much a particular plant will grow.

You need to follow: each level must be higher than the previous one. In this arrangement, planting plants receive more light, air, evolve freely, less sick.

Principles of selection of plants for the fencelight - loving or shade - tolerant

  • moisture-loving or drought-resistant
  • compatibility with each other
  • the outer row performs security functions
  • internal – decorative or useful (you can also plant berry bushes)
  • fast-growing or slow-growing
  • spreading or pyramidal

Constructions of living fences

A natural living fence in the country – plants grow in rows, closing into a continuous strip of fence.

Hedges of climbing plants

They need a wooden frame or a chain-link frame, you can also use steel wire stretched between the pillars.

Climbing plants are allowed on a wire or a grid — beautiful screens are obtained. Suitable: herbaceous or tree-like perennial lianas (such as campsis, hops, honeysuckle-caprifol, lemongrass, climbing rose, actinidia-columicta, ivy, wisteria, clematis, calistegia, Amur grapes).

Screens of climbing annuals can be installed every season in different places of the site, for example, they can decorate a live fence that is just beginning to grow. Suitable: dolichos, thunbergia, nasturtium, ipomoea, decorative pumpkin, sweet peas, kobea, echinocystis.

The place under the hedge should be carefully chosen, taking into account the degree of overgrowth of lianas.

Hedges of conifers

When planting conifers, it should be taken into account that they grow slowly, it will take several years to create such a fence.

Spruce, thuja, juniper, yew, various cypress trees, mountain pine are perfect for her.  Thuja is the most unpretentious of conifers, loves haircuts, easily tolerates transplanting. Siberian, prickly, bluish, and oriental firs are suitable.

It is better to plant coniferous young in September. The soil should be sufficiently moist and loose, at a distance of at least a meter, and if the fence is two-, three-row, then there should be at least 80 cm between the seedlings.

Cossack juniper (varieties with needles of different colors) forms impassable thickets. Virginian — grows fast, ordinary – for a long time, but it can live in the garden for more than 200 years. Resistant to severe frosts, Chinese or scaly junipers branch well.

Yew in the Russian climate is best planted in places protected from the north wind; it is unpretentious, perfectly suitable for curbs, tolerates pruning well.

Conifers do not bloom, but you can always beat the color of golden, silver, bluish, light and dark green needles.

Deciduous trees and shrubs

Deciduous, deciduous and evergreen, are used to create hedges of different heights.

Tall (more often trees: linden, maple, hornbeam, poplar tolerate pruning well, are resistant to the adverse effects of automobile exhaust, dust, etc.). Excellent for the background of a hedge.

The medium–sized ones are such a living fence made of shrubs (willow, rosehip, hawthorn, barberry, holly-leaved magonia, privet, black-fruited dogwood, red and black elder, tree hydrangea, spirea, viburnum, brilliant dogwood, lilac, forsythia, Japanese quince, and also boxwood).

Boxwood is evergreen, perfectly tolerates haircut. In winter, it is better to cover it with agrospan or sprinkle with snow to protect the foliage from winter sunburn.

Border plants for the fence: boxwood barberry, boxwood, Fortune birch bark, karagana, brilliant honeysuckle, golden currant, heather, low or steppe almonds, shrubby and Daurian, dye droc, alpine currant. These shrubs can become the second or third tier in the hedge.

Plants for the border must meet several conditions:

  • limited growth
  • crown density
  • unpretentiousness
  • good haircut tolerance
  • decorative

Curbs of low-growing shrubs can successfully frame paths in the garden, lawn, playground, etc. plot zones.

Delicious and healthy fence

It is better to arrange a live fence of edible berries inside a suburban area. If they are planted outside, it is unlikely that the owners will get the fruits. Suitable: rosehip, viburnum, barberry, chokeberry, felt cherry. And beautiful, and delicious, and healing.

Choosing plants for the fenceplants should be adapted and take root well in this climatic zone

  • shade- or light-loving (depends on where they will be planted)
  • tolerance of haircuts or loose plantings
  • conifers saturate the air with useful phytoncides
  • you can alternate conifers with deciduous
  • it is better to lay an evergreen hedge in April
  • plants can serve not only as a hedge, but also as a source of healthy and delicious berries.

A live fence in the country – what to do first?

First of all, it is important to determine the boundaries of the site and the zone inside, to think about whether the live fences will be permanent or temporary and the most important thing that they will cover or delimit.

Then it will become clear for which zone, for what purpose certain plants will be needed, where they will need a haircut, and where they can grow freely.

Which plants to choose?

It is best to purchase those that are adapted to these climatic conditions.

Stunted and curbby ones can be successfully grown from cuttings; the rest should be purchased young, no older than 6 years. The roots of plants should be fresh, not dry, healthy, and the crown should be comprehensively developed.

How to make a live fencewe determine the support for the fence of climbing plants

  • we mark out trenches for planting the desired width (taking into account the number of rows in the hedge)
  • we prepare holes for seedlings, if there are several rows – in a staggered order
  • do not forget to do drainage
  • observe the proportions of the distance between plants
  • as a mulch, you can use pebbles of different colors and decorative sand – they will protect delicate young plants from drying out of the soil and besides – they look very beautiful

Soil and hedge care

Watering should be moderate, but not excessive – it is impossible to allow an overabundance of moisture, as well as drying of the soil.

Timely fertilizing, mulching, regular loosening will ensure the hedge is in excellent condition, the plants will be beautiful and healthy.

The optimal planting time is the middle and second half of September, so that the plants have time to take root well before winter.

Pruning should be carried out regularly – in early spring, in the middle of summer, in mid-autumn.

It is possible to build a hedge only if there is a willingness to constantly monitor the condition of plants, regularly and on time to water, feed, prune.

In general, it is easy to make a live fence, inexpensive. However, you need to carefully weigh whether there is enough time, effort and desire to maintain the fence in the right condition so that it pleases the eye and faithfully serves as a beautiful and durable fence.
