Garage doors — sectional and swing options. 100 photos of insulation and installation with your own hands
For every car enthusiast, a garage is a mandatory and irreplaceable building. It provides the car with protection from adverse weather conditions and safety from intruders. Often in private sectors it is even attached to the main dwelling.
Regardless of whether the garage is located on a private territory or is part of a cooperative, the gates perform the most important function in it. Their design depends on individual preferences and the size of the room.
There are two options: to make a gate with your own hands, which will meet all the necessary requirements of the owner, or to purchase ready-made ones.
Garage doors can be of different types. There is no consensus on which ones are better or more convenient. Some are captivated by their reliability, others by their appearance and innovation in use.
Swing gates
This is a reliable conservative option. They are very easy to install, do not require large time and material costs. They consist of several iron shutters tightly attached to each other, suspended on hinges. The frame for them is made of a steel corner. Often, a doorway is cut out in one of the parts. A simple mechanism allows you to install the entire structure yourself.
Rollback
They consist of several or one leaf, when opened, the gate is pushed aside parallel to the fence or the garage wall. They are installed in large garages, hangars, at the entrance to the site.
Space is needed for free running. The mechanism is complex, has many nuances, and the installation of such gates will require the help of a specialist.
Lifting gates
The single-leaf gates, opening, rise up to the ceiling and become in a position parallel to the floor. They move according to the hinge-lever type. They are considered compact, they do not require a lot of space to open them.
A good choice for a small garage, in the case when it is heated, under unfavorable climatic conditions, the mechanism can jam and block.
Sectional garage doors
Sectional garage doors are very modern, easy to use, installed only by professionals.
When opened, they move along the guides and drive up to the ceiling. They consist of refractive sections moving by means of a spring mechanism. They work by chain transmission.
Roller shutters
Roller shutters are considered not reliable, difficult to install, owners rarely choose this type. They consist of separate aluminum plates, when opened they rise to the ceiling and are folded into a special box. Favorable climatic conditions are required for normal functioning. As well as protection or protection from vandals.
Under each description there are corresponding photos of garage doors.
All input structures can be automated and controlled using a remote control mounted in a keychain.
When choosing a suitable gate, it is necessary to take into account such characteristics as practicality, durability, burglary resistance, ease of operation and aesthetic appearance.
If the garage is not heated, the best choice will be swing gates, which serve perfectly even at low temperatures.
Motorists with special knowledge, versed in installation, can themselves develop a project, make a drawing, purchase the necessary materials and completely create a structure. Although you will have to try hard, performing all the technical features of the assembly, so that the result pleases with quality and high functionality.
Designing and creating a drawing
First you need to determine the size of the gate, it depends on the height and width of the garage and the car itself. On a piece of paper, using a pencil and ruler, a sketch is drawn showing the layout and dimensions of the garage. A comfortable space for entry is considered to be 2.5-3 m wide and up to 2.5 m high.
The distance from the frame to the perpendicular wall is ideally at least 80cm. Entry and exit must be unhindered and safe for cars. At least 30cm should separate the edge of the machine to the nearest wall.
The design process
For the manufacture of metal swing gates, you will need to weld a metal frame, make a sheathing of sheets, install racks, hinges, locks, stoppers and latches. Necessary tools and materials:
- bulgarian;
- welding machine;
- roulette;
- level;
- square;
- metal corner;
- iron sheets;
- steel strips;
- reinforcing bar;
- gate valve;
- profile (for example, 60x30 or 60x20);
- reinforced loops;
- locks
After all measurements are carried out accurately, you can start the production of the frame. For garage doors, it includes an external and internal frame.
Manufacturing of the mounting framePrepare the frame elements.
- From the metal corner with a grinder, cut four segments of the size corresponding to the height and width of the garage opening.
- On a flat space, lay out the blanks, in this form, as the finished frame should look. With the help of a square, carefully measure the diagonals, adjust the angles to 90 degrees.
- Put the edges of the iron corners on top of each other and weld them together. This method is more durable, in comparison with welding in one plane. Sand the seams with a grinder for a tight fit of the gate to the frame.
- So that the steel corner does not lead, and the frame remains rigid, metal scraps should be welded into vertical "levers".
Skeleton
The frame should be slightly smaller in size than the gate frame, metal shutters are attached to it, for which a rectangular profile of 60 * 20 mm or also a steel corner can be used.
From any suitable material, make four segments 10-15mm smaller than the dimensions of the frame height. Thanks to this, the movement of the flaps will not be hindered. If there are two shutters, cut four segments corresponding to the width of the gate, divided in half and reduced by 30-35mm.
On a flat surface, it is better inside the finished frame, check the right angles and weld the frame.
Gate leaves
The most common material for the manufacture of garage door sashes is steel sheet. Running thickness 2-4 mm. The height of the shutters should exceed the height of the garage doorway by 3 cm and to overlap, they will differ by 2 cm in length from each other.
First, welded corners and the middle of the cloth, and then with an interval of 10-15 cm pinpoint the movements of the rest of the sheet. To prevent deformation, cut off excess weld in the corners.
Then reinforced hinges are welded. The lower part is to the frame, and the upper part is to the sash.
Reinforcement and metal strips can be reinforced by welding strips of about 6 mm to the upper half of the loop and to the sash. The fittings are welded from the inside.
When everything is ready, the corners are smooth, everything is securely fastened, the doors open freely and close tightly, you can start installing the gate.
Installation
First, you need to attach the outer and inner parts of the frame to the slopes of the garage opening with metal pins. The ends of the pins are cut, ground with a grinder and painted over.
With the help of metal plates (jumpers), the outer and inner frames are fastened at a distance of 60 cm.
At the end, the shutters are hung, the free movement of the gate is checked.
To prevent the gate from skewing and protect them from the harmful effects of wind and precipitation, vertical locks should be installed, they will provide reliable fastening. It is also required to paste a seal for maximum fit of the flaps to the frame.
To protect the canvas from adverse conditions and destruction, the finished gates are primed and covered with several layers of oil paint.
Locks
To protect the garage, padlocks, mortise locks are used, or pin stops and bolts are used. The stopper is a part of the pipe into the cavity with which the metal rod is immersed. It should pass through a loop welded to the gate and stick into the floor or ceiling. Basically, with the help of a stopper (lock), one gate leaf is closed, an internal lock is cut into the other.
From the outside, it is desirable to strengthen the protection with a padlock, which is threaded into loops welded to the edges of the two flaps.
Locks require timely careful maintenance and protection from weather conditions and corrosion.
Insulation of garage doors
Foam is often used to insulate the garage doors. Sheets of insulation material are laid out on the inner flaps of the frame and fixed with plywood or lining.
You can make a wooden crate, lay it with PSB-C styrofoam or mineral wool and seal it with facing plates. The main thing is to fill all the airspace well.
Additionally, a plastic curtain can be installed inside the garage or a tarpaulin can be hung.
After carrying out insulation work, do not forget about good ventilation.
The production of the gate takes about 2-3 days of work, and the result is a unique size and a special design. Self-made work increases self-esteem and improves mood.
