Flowerbeds of perennials: rules and features of cultivation for beginners (85 photos)

An ideal flower garden is a luxurious flowerbed in scale and variety, which does not stop pleasing others with the beauty of buds and leaves for as long as possible. Such harmony is achieved by careful observance of the rules of planting, seed selection, plot planning schemes and many other horticultural secrets. Read here: installation of drains.

In general, most prefer perennial flowers, with which you can achieve continuous flowering due to properly selected varieties, levels and layers.

Perennials, unlike annuals, are able to take their place on a summer garden bed for several years. With the arrival of cold weather, only the upper part of the plant withers, and the rhizomes and tubers remain in the ground for a period often exceeding a decade.

In addition to a long life span, they differ in a number of other advantages:

  • A wide range of varieties and species (more than 300 thousand);
  • Unpretentiousness in growth, not a requirement for much attention;
  • Long flowering period;
  • Frost resistance;
  • Preservation of excellent decorative qualities throughout the cycle;
  • The ability to reproduce through rhizomes, shoots and seeds, allowing the transplanting of flowers, the breaking of new flower beds without additional investment;
  • Inclusion in the group of medicinal plants, which makes it possible to grow a personal pharmacy.

Creating a perennial flowerbed

Properly planted in a flower bed, perennial flowers should create a continuous flowering, when new buds come to replace the fading varieties, and so on until the end of the summer season.

Planning and designing a new front garden includes several important rules that must be taken into account at the preparation stage:

  • Inclusion of the flowerbed in the general zoning of the site;
  • The possibility of using the terrain;
  • Proper selection of plants;
  • Planting density and flowering duration.

The first two points involve the search for individual ideas and solutions, when, depending on the zoning of the site, the allocation of separate zones, the availability of free places on the territory, the most favorable position for the future flowerbed is sought.

In each case, there is a detailed acquaintance with the front garden being built, the nature of the soil, its illumination, humidity, and even neighboring buildings, shrubs and trees.

Choosing a suitable perennial

The question of which perennials are suitable for creating a lush flowerbed requires additional analysis. Mainly, attention is drawn to several factors: the type of soil, the illumination of the location, the available area, the flowering cycle, the combination of appearance and color.

So, fertile lands are loved by lupin, bluebell and mallow, and too damp and swampy is ideal for asters, yarrow and nivyanik. An admixture of loam, sand and crushed stone will not interfere with the growth of flax, valerian and sage, and phlox, cloves, and cosmea are not afraid of dry soil.

The sun's rays play an important role in the life of plants, but not all flowers prefer flower beds in the exhausting light. Different types of ferns, lilies of the valley and host are more fond of shade, for iris, primrose and astilba, 4-6 hours of sun exposure is enough, and above this time only peonies, phlox, poppies and asters can withstand the heat.

Aconite, dicenter, hellebore, funkia, geranium Endress, plantain doronicum, musky mallow, purple gravilate, crowded bell do not require large spaces.

It is important to take into account the plant cycle to create a flowerbed of continuous flowering. For example, meconopsis blooms from May to June, delphinium from June to July, ochitok pleases with buds from July to September, and sage until the end of August.

It is also necessary to calculate the desire and time to take care of the front gardens. If you are not afraid of time-consuming and long-term care, then feel free to plant lilies, chrysanthemums, begonias, roses, hyacinth, dahlias, oenothera and gladioli.

For the lazy, flowers that are unpretentious in care are suitable: peonies, irises, astilba, geranium, asters, daylily, ochitok, phlox, badan, clemantis, hosta and lupin.

The following recommendations are also taken into account when selecting colors:

  • Only one palette is used: warm or cold;
  • Visually increase the flowerbed uniformity and the minimum number of flowers;
  • Beautiful flower beds of perennials are obtained if white, pink and blue inflorescences are used as background;
  • Saturated and calm levels should alternate;
  • Red flowers should not be planted in large spaces;
  • One bright and rich flowerbed is enough for one garden.

Flowerbed schemes

According to the composition, all front gardens are conditionally divided into two large groups: regular and irregular.

In the first case, the flowerbed has a clear distinction depending on the original pattern embedded in it. At the same time, the flowers are planted in groups and for one flowering period. In the opposite variant, the plants are grouped almost in a chaotic order and bloom alternately, which is typical for perennials.

Also, suburban flowerbeds are divided according to their shape into round, rectangular, oval, triangular. At the same time, the zoning of the flower garden space is purely individual: you can repeat geometric shapes, draw straight or winding lines from the center, create unusual patterns and ornaments.

In the modern art of landscape design, stepped complexes or high flower beds created from specially made boxes and boxes about a meter high have become popular. Often, different-level pools are cast from concrete.

Schemes of flowerbeds from perennials are very diverse in the division of the inner section into sections and compartments, however, the main principle of planting is always observed: the brightest and tallest are placed in the center, shorter and dimmer plants in the middle, and the composition is framed by stunted and long–flowering specimens.

Flowerbeds of perennials are bright, beautiful and attractive – this can be seen both in person and from photographs. In general, the creation of any flower garden involves a competent choice, grouping and distribution of flowers according to their growth, color and cycle.

With the use of perennial flowers, this eventually results in a well-groomed miniature complex, striking with continuous flowering during the entire spring-summer-autumn season.
