Flowerbed of stones — design options for building with your own hands (85 photo ideas)

The owners of country houses and cottages are not limited to the arrangement of a garden or vegetable garden on their site. Many people strive to decorate the space with original flower beds. One of the popular ways to decorate the landscape is to create design structures made of stone of various breeds.

You can make them yourself, without involving professional and often expensive specialists. And how best to solve this problem, we will consider in this article.

Before deciding how to make a flower bed in a suburban area, it is necessary to choose the most suitable raw materials for this. Natural stone will help you to design an original element that will look very natural on your site, will fit into any style of landscape. It is environmentally safe, durable, resistant to external natural influences.

At the same time, the material itself can be very diverse:

Limestone. It has a wide palette of shades – from yellowish and cream to gray, blue and even pink. To exclude the appearance of cracks due to porosity, all cavities are filled with soil or planted with groundcover plants, as well as mosses.

Sandstone — allows you to decorate in the most bizarre way, but is highly susceptible to destruction.

Volcanic tuff is used in the arrangement of artificial terraces or for the design of design elements located near reservoirs. It is durable, but it is processed quite easily, has a wide range of colors.

Slate, which has a layered structure, is widely used in the design of raised flower beds. It is distinguished by its original shine, durability, water resistance, plasticity.

Durable and resistant to temperature fluctuations granite. Distinguished by its original brilliance and shimmering under sunlight quartzite. High-strength basalt will strengthen the slopes on the site and decorate artificial terraces.

A neat pebble will help you create a beautiful fence, which can be decorated in a variety of ways in the future. But for strength, the elements must be bonded with cement.

A composition that uses decorative stone for original and beautiful flower beds will fit well into the landscape. It is made from a mixture of stone chips and acrylic. Additionally, it is necessary to add polyester resins. This material successfully imitates sandstone, slate and even granite. And the structures themselves will be strong and durable.

Types of design solutions

If you plan to make your allotment original, then you need to take a responsible approach to the design of the landscape.

It is important not only to choose high-quality material, but also to plan the right composition, combine several flower beds into a whole ensemble.

The usual composition, designed using this material, has a clarity of forms and boundaries. In the manufacture, a curb is used, which is laid out with cobblestones in one or more layers.

Gabions are distinguished by the use of a two-layer metal mesh as a frame. The composition of the desired fraction is poured into it. Thanks to this, the structure receives additional stability, as well as improved drainage.

It will be very interesting to design a flower bed with natural or artificial stones, if you choose rockery. To do this, you need to pick up cobblestones belonging to the same breed, but having different sizes.

Limestone or slate will look good in the design. Large boulders should be buried, and small–sized ones should be scattered over the area. In the ground, you can plant a low-growing shrub or plants that creep.

For an alpine slide, you should plant mountain plants with strong roots. As a material, cobblestones laid out in the form of a multi-stage structure are used. But a raised flower garden will allow you to decorate an allotment with poor soil. Creating a multi-tiered structure significantly saves space.

A qualitative transformation of the territory in the garden can be seen in the photo of a flowerbed of stones laid out in the form of a terrace. Quartz, basalt or granite, which have increased strength, are used as a material. And limestone with sandstone will help to form a mountain view.

If you take the elements of a rounded shape and place them point-by-point across the area, you will get a beautiful Japanese garden. They are covered with moss, and a variety of plants can be planted between them. It is necessary to carefully lay out pebbles on the ground, and install a small fence around the perimeter.

How to properly design a space?

It is possible to form a harmonious landscape on the territory of a country house only with the correct placement of flower beds of different types. At the same time, you need to follow the instructions for their arrangement.

Place preparation

A properly designed flower garden should not create an excessive load on the landscape. It is necessary to ensure free passage through the territory, and there are no obstacles for watering.

The shape of the flowerbed in the country is determined by the place of its installation. For example, compositions having a rectangular or oval shape will be appropriate only in open areas where they can be viewed from all sides. But semicircular curtains can be installed near the walls.

So, gabion is placed along the walls or fence, and an arabesque or an alpine slide will perfectly fit into the landscape of an open lawn with a slight height difference. A raised flowerbed looks perfect in the center of the plot, and a rockery – on a flat, well-visible surface.

Technology of arrangement

First you need to carefully clear the place of arrangement of the flower garden, remove all the garbage, grass, and level the territory. For rectangular structures, marking is necessary using pegs with stretched twine. If you plan to install wide curbs, then the internal and external borders are marked along the rope.

Marking of round or oval flower beds is made as follows. A string is stretched between two pegs, which has a length equal to the radius of the future structure. One of the pins is placed in the center, and the second peg begins to outline a given circle.

As soon as you have outlined the contours, you need to start laying the material. They are placed around the perimeter with a deepening. For greater strength of the masonry, the material is laid in several layers. If you do not plan to create a powerful or large-scale composition, then the usual laying out of equal-sized smooth cobblestones on top of each other will do.

For stability, you can fasten the elements with cement mortar or glue. This is mandatory if the object is large.

To get very beautiful flower beds, you need to pick up plants. The features of the decorative elements used should also be taken into account. The larger the boulders used, the higher and larger the plants can be planted.

Construction of a flower garden with a border

To build a fence, it is necessary to dig a trench for the foundation along the perimeter. Its depth can be 250-300 mm. The specific dimensions of the recess depend on the size of the boulders that will fit into it. Find out more here about the compost pit.

Roofing material or polyethylene should be laid on the bottom of the trench. A pillow of sand falls asleep on top. Although for a construction of small particles, this stage can be skipped.

The roofing material is filled with a layer of cement, and sand is laid on top of it on a third of the moat and well tamped. After solidification of the concrete base, first large blocks are installed on the sand layer, and then smaller ones. The gaps between them are filled with a mixture of concrete.

Additives from crushed stone and gravel will give greater structural strength. If you leave several holes on the lower level, then improve ventilation in the structure.

The ground part of the frame should have a slight slope inwards. Smooth cobblestones are used for its arrangement. In order not to spoil the appearance of the masonry, the cracks are sealed with a solution from the inside. It is necessary to remove the top layer of earth from the surface, lay drainage and fill it with fertile soil. Planting of plants is carried out in 2-3 days, after the subsidence of the soil.

A brick curb is made in a similar way. The moat is first filled with sand, then with a layer of crushed stone or gravel. Bricks are laid on top, but they are not fastened with a solution, allowing excess water to freely go beyond.

The use of stone elements in the flower garden

The designer's task is to make a flowerbed of stones, arranged with his own hands, as suitable as possible for the growth of flowers and other plants. That is why much attention is paid to drainage.

The plot needs to be deepened by 500 mm. The mini-pit should be filled with layers of sand, gravel of fine fraction and crushed stone. So excess moisture will be easily removed. If you plan to put pots or vases with plants, then drill a drainage hole in the bottom part.

To arrange on the slope of the rock garden, it is necessary to remove the top layer of soil, and then tamper. After laying the drainage, it needs to be covered with fertile soil. The stones installed in autumn will sink under the influence of rainwater, and plants can be planted in the formed spaces with the ground.

Creating gabions of a rounded or square shape requires the purchase of a special grid. But masters can successfully equip more complex structures.

Construction of raised structures

A high flower garden requires the construction of a powerful retaining wall made of stone with a height of 500-1000 mm. The design of the flowerbed will be more original if you build it in a multi-tiered type. The walls must necessarily be fastened with cement mortar.

At the first stage, it is necessary to mark the area of the site taking into account the width of the retaining wall. Then a groove with a depth of 250-300 mm is dug out. At its bottom, it is necessary to fill in fine-grained gravel with a layer of 100-150 mm.

Here you can also add fragments of stones or debris of construction origin. Reinforcing bars or mesh are laid on top, and then concrete is poured.

Then, on the site, large cobblestones begin to be laid on the first level. They need to be sealed with a solution. The vertical slits left behind will ensure the best outflow of water. After you raise the wall to the desired height, you need to start laying several levels of smooth and attractive blocks.

Remember, for the arrangement of the external surface of the aboveground part of the retaining wall, it is advisable to turn large stones outward with a more attractive side.

As a result of the work carried out, you will get a frame with a cavity inside. At its bottom, a drainage of gravel with a thickness of up to 70 mm and sand up to 50 mm should be laid. Then the nutrient soil is poured, watered.

Additional earth filling and leveling is performed from above. This will make an attractive and original composition that can decorate any country house.
