Decorative fence: 85 photos of modern projects and structures

Decorative fences are often used for zoning space in gardens and homesteads, plant protection in flower beds. With the right approach and a good imagination, a decorative fence can carry not only its direct function, but also become an ornament that complements the appearance of the site.

The modern range of decorative fences is very large and the choice of material and shape depends on their direct purpose. You can also build a fence with your own hands.

A good option would be to buy a ready-made plastic fence for a flower bed. Its advantage is a low price, a wide range of products of different colors, shapes and sizes. Such fences are quickly and easily installed thanks to modular compartments.

Natural materials

A homemade wattle made of twigs will look original. To do this, you will need:

  • Twigs and branches
  • Pruner
  • Knife
  • Axe
  • Scrap
  • A hammer
  • Roulette

Divide the rods into 2 parts. Thick branches are suitable for vertical stakes, and thin ones need to be woven into walls. From large branches, you need to separate the side shoots and shorten them to the desired height.

Make a marking on which the fence will be installed. To make holes for stakes, hammer a crowbar into the ground. Carefully drive the stakes into the holes. In order not to damage them, it is better not to use a hammer, but a mallet.

When weaving the walls, start working from the bottom. One horizontally positioned rod should bend around two vertical ones. After the walls are woven, cut off the branches protruding to the last stake.

Tree

You can also make a fence made of wood to fence a flower bed. The material almost always harmoniously fits into the design of the site.

It is not necessary to purchase a forest specifically for this purpose – you can use the remnants of the tree already available on the farm. Depending on the number, length and shape of the trimmings, you can think over the appearance of the future fence.

A picket fence will come out of thick boards, or you can make a stylish fence by placing these boards horizontally.

To make a picket fence, you need:

  • Roulette
  • Wooden posts
  • Material for crossbars
  • Facing board (the picket itself)
  • Nails or self-tapping screws
  • Concrete

It is very easy to build such a fence – calculate the required height and length and cut the boards and posts to the required dimensions.

In order for the structure to stand longer and not squint, the pits in which they are installed should be concreted without digging in the columns. After that, screw the crossbars and place the picket fence at an equal distance from each other.

The "transparency" of the barrier depends on the width of the step between the facing boards. You can also figuratively cut patterns on the top of the facing boards, this will add to the originality of the design.

A subspecies of a picket fence is a "checkerboard" — the boards are packed alternately on both sides of the crossbar board. From the front, the fence looks deaf and solid, and when viewed at an angle, gaps are noticeable. Such a barrier looks interesting, unusual and spectacular. The disadvantage is the large consumption of material during construction.

According to approximately the same principle, a horizontal fence is built. In this case, crossbars are not needed, and the picket is attached horizontally to the posts, separated from each other by the length of the facing board.

Thin slats can be used to create a lattice fence. Such a barrier looks easy, fresh and original.

A low fence of this type will look good around the flower garden, and a high one will give an unusual look to the gazebo. The decoration of such a grid will be any weaving plant – wild grapes, ivy, clematis or annual ipomoea.

Usually picket "cells" are mounted on a square or rectangular wooden base. You can buy such blocks in a construction hypermarket, or you can sharpen such a fence with your own hands.

There are many options for the location of rails in such a fence and everything is limited only by your imagination. The slats can be positioned horizontally, vertically or diagonally, vary the distance between the slats or their width, while each time the fence will have a different appearance.

Concrete

A simple and reliable option for a suburban area is the installation of a decorative concrete fence. Reinforced concrete slabs, from which sections of the fence are made, immediately come complete with pillars, which is very convenient and reduces the installation time of the fence.

The pillars are dug to the same depth and concreted. After the solution dries, you can proceed with the installation of concrete slabs. Sections and pillars have special slots for easy installation without the use of additional materials.

Concrete blocks are easy to paint with special impregnations and acrylic-based paints and have many shapes, which helps them harmoniously fit into the design of any site.

Stone

The most durable of the above list are stone structures. They are not affected by high humidity and temperature changes.

The most suitable for construction are sandstone, limestone, rubble stone, dolomite and even simple large cobblestones.

Low stone fences for cottages can be made independently by fastening natural stone with cement mortar. The advantage of such a fence is originality, the ability to independently adjust the height and length of the fence.

Products such as gabions look original and unusual. Many have seen photos of decorative fences made of metal mesh filled with stones, but did not know the name of this type of fence. Despite its futuristic appearance, gabions blend well into the landscape of the suburban area thanks to the natural stone.

Gabions are divided into 2 types: box mesh and welded wire. They differ only in the method of creating the framework.

It is not necessary to fill the gabion with any stones that come across. Granite, natural quartzite, porphyite and sandstone are well suited for this purpose.

The size of the stones is also important. It depends on the size of the grid cells. The stones should be at least a third larger than the cells. Nets filled with multicolored stones look very beautiful.

Gabions do not necessarily have a cubic or rectangular shape, there are grids of different lengths and shapes.

Metal

A metal fence can be bought at a hardware store or made to order. The product according to an individual sketch always looks noble and interesting. Metal is a durable material. With annual painting and treatment with anticorrosive compounds, the fence can last for more than a dozen years.

Pillars

To install fences in construction stores, you can buy decorative fence posts. They have different sizes, colors and textures, which helps to choose poles that are in harmony with the design of the sections of the future fence.

Both solid products and block models are available for sale. The material for them is brick and concrete.

Conclusion

Every owner dreams of seeing his plot well-groomed and stylish. It is not always beautiful and well–groomed - it means "expensive". There are always options for fences that are ideal both in terms of functionality and price.
